Blood Bound By Ellis Hunter
Ellis Hunter’s Blood Bound is an expansive fantasy full of magic, danger, familiars, witches, dragon riders, and a world with plenty happening beneath the surface. I gave it 4 stars overall; I enjoyed the story and appreciated the underlying ideas, though I felt the beginning could have been streamlined.
Right from the start, the reader is hit with a wealth of information: an entire world, multiple languages, a magic and familiar system, witches, dragon riders, and an assassination plot all unfold in the opening pages. It’s a lot to process, and it makes the introduction feel overwhelming, too many concepts jostle for attention before the story has a chance to settle.
For a novel over 400 pages, I think some editorial trimming could have helped create a smoother entry point. The worldbuilding is impressive, but it would have benefited from being spread out more, allowing the setting and characters to breathe. A stronger editorial hand could have eased readers into the story instead of throwing them straight into the deep end.
The brief, fast-switching chapters at the start also add to the crowded feel. Rather than quicken the pace, they make the opening seem rushed and disjointed, even though the content itself is compelling.
That said, if you move past the packed introduction, there’s a lot to like. The novel features classic fantasy elements, a real sense of danger, and enough originality to keep things interesting. The world feels vast, the stakes are high, and it’s clear there’s much more to explore as the story unfolds.
I didn’t dislike this book, far from it. My biggest frustration is that the potential is so obvious. With a cleaner start, Blood Bound could have been even more impactful. As it stands, it’s an enjoyable, creative fantasy that asks a lot of the reader early on, but rewards those who stick with it.
A solid 4-star read: ambitious, entertaining, and promising, but held back just a bit by a crowded opening that deserved more space.
